Trace Fossils (Ichnofossils)

Trace fossils record the activity or behavior of organisms rather than their physical bodies.

  • Footprints and Trackways Impressions left by feet or limbs in soft sediment that later lithified.

  • Burrows and Borings Tunnels, holes, or galleries created by animals in sediment, wood, or rock.

  • Coprolites Fossilized feces, which provide valuable information about ancient diets and ecosystems.

  • Other Traces Examples include gastroliths (stomach stones), bite marks, root traces, and feeding trails.
